HIP FRACTURES
Hip is a joint where thigh bone (femur) meets with the hip (Acetabulum) bone. The “hip” is a ball-and-socket joint that allows the leg to bend and rotate at the pelvis.
Types of Fractures
- Intracapsular Fracture (Neck of femur)
- Extracapsuar (Intertrochanteric or Subtrochanteric Fracture)
Causes
- Fall
- Road traffic accidents
- Osteoporosis
- Cancer (metastasis)
Symptoms
- Pain
- Inability to bear weight
- Inability to move the joint
- Shortening of the leg
- Deformity
Investigations
- X-rays
- CT Scan
- MRI
TREATMEMENT
Non-Surgical
It’s only in surgically unfit patients.
- Rest
- Immobilisation – Derotation splints
- Analgesics
Surgical
Neck of femur Fracture :
Young patients – cancellous screw fixation
Old patients – Bipolar Hemiarthroplasty

Intertrochanteric Fracture:
Dynamic Hip Screw and plate fixation(DHS)
Nailing (PFN, Intertan)

Subtrochanteric Fracture:
Plating
Nailing( Recon)
